Course Overview

The course focuses on collision prevention through hazard recognition and application of accident-avoidance techniques. The course also focuses on common driving violations that result in accidents and the necessity of changing driving habits to minimize accident risks.


Topics covered are:

  • Personal responsibility and driving
  • Defensive driving definition
  • Preventable collisions
  • Hazard recognition
  • Impaired driving
  • Alcohol and other drugs, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs
  • Aggressive driving
  • The driving environment:
    • driver conditions
    • other drivers
    • light conditions
    • roads and road conditions
    • traffic conditions
    • weather conditions
    • vehicle conditions: servicing schedule, mechanical faults and causes etc.
  • Defensive driving techniques for avoiding collisions
  • The six most common driving errors
  • Choosing safe and legal behaviours



Wayne Brown has 25 years of driver testing and motor vehicle administration experience both within the Ministry of Works and Transport (Licensing Office) and within a large fleet organization (TSTT). He has trained and tested drivers of all classes of vehicles in defensive driving, driver safety practices and on issues of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Regulations.


Wayne is the holder of a BSc in Government and Management Studies (UWI) and is a certified Defensive Driving Instructor (Canada Safety Council – Ontario Safety League).

Fees payable to CTSCBCS Registration Fees & total cost of tuition $400 TTD, payments can be made via credit card, linx or manager's cheque.


Exams and Assessments

At the end of the program twenty (20) multiple choice questions are given to assess how well participants listened.


Materials and Equipment

A workbook will be provided for this course.


Certification Renewals

Certification renewal is required every three (3) years and thus participants are required to be re-certified after three years.
