No prerequisites. If you cannot use a computer or you are limited in what you can do on a computer then this course is for you.

COURSE OUTLINE  [Top]

INTRODUCTION
Introduction to the computer and its components, powering on a computer, using the mouse, keyboard, cd-rom, starting an application, playing a game, introduction to the network, a general guide into the capabilities of a computer (use of a multimedia file). Opening a file, closing a file, etc.

COMPUTER & COMPONENTS
Computer Systems, Input, Output, Processing; Hardware and Software; the components- hardware components, software components; General Definitions; Bits and Bytes; Storage size of different secondary storage medium; When to use different secondary storage medium.

WINDOWS XP
The desktop: arranging icons, changing the properties - background, colour scheme, size of the screen area, screen saver.

Working with Programs -Starting a program, switching between programs, minimizing all open windows.

Files and Folders - Managing your files: open a file or folder, create a folder, copy a file or folder, sending a file to a floppy disk, moving a file or folder, create a shortcut, changing the name of the file or folder, deleting a file or folder.

Searching for Files -finding a file or folder

How files and folders look; changing the appearance of items in a desktop, show all files and filename extensions.

WORD XP
Creating a document; Saving and Retrieving a document, Editing a document: deleting text , insert text. Formatting Text:- bold, italics, underline; Inserting a picture, Creating a bullet numbered list, Creating a Table, Adding a border to the page, Adding page headers and footers. Formatting documents- writing resume.

EXCEL XP
Working with Cells, Rows and Columns:

Workbook files: creating new, saving and naming/renaming,. Working with worksheets: naming: deleting, copying/moving: moving between multiple files. Working with Ranges: Selecting: copying and moving, clearing, naming and finding.

Performing calculations, Formulas: entering, displaying, Copying, functions,  autosum, product.

Cell and Range Formatting: Borders, Fill Effects, Alignment and Data Formats. Creating and Modifying Charts:

POWERPOINT XP
Working with a presentation: Creating a Presentation, Presentation views (slide, outline, slide sorter and slide show views), Creating a custom presentation, Entering/ modifying slide text using slide/ Outline view, Inserting slides (new slides and from other presentations), Deleting and rearranging slides, Previewing the presentation (slide show),Applying a template, Inserting a clip art. Slide Transitions: setting slide transitions, changing transition speeds. Presentation design tips.

ACCESS XP
Define database, tables, records and fields, primary key; forms; reports; queries. Creating a simple database with one table using specific field types, autonumber, text, date, number, lookup wizard. Creating Forms in different view (columnar, tabular). Navigating to different records within a form; Inserting, Deleting and Amending records using a form. Creating Reports, sorting reports, grouping data etc. Create Query with a single condition and with multiple conditions.

Create a report using data from a query.

INTERNET & EMAIL
Internet terms. Learn how to access and use the internet, browse web sites and use search engines.

Read email, create / send / receive email. Adding addresses etc.

WEB PAGE DESIGN
Use Microsoft Front Page to design a simple web site. Add pictures, hyperlinks, and text to your webpage. You are geared towards setting up your own mini web site.

DESKTOP PUBLISHING
Learn to create beautiful post cards and banners for your family and friends. You don't need to buy postcards anymore!

PRINTING
Learn the basics of printing your documents.

COMPUTER CARE
Learn how to care for your computer

ANTIVIRUS
Learn about viruses and how thy can infect your computer; learn how to get rid of viruses.

COMPRESSING FILES
When files become too large to store on your external drive, you need to shrink (compress) these files. We will show you how to compress it and how to uncompress the files.
